What You’ll Need For Your College Apartment

First college apartment? You don’t want to bring too much… but you certainly don’t want to bring too little! Of course, you know your own needs best (or your mom does), but we offer this handy checklist to make sure you remember the essentials:

Bedroom

  • pillow(s)
  • mattress pad
  • sheets
  • blanket or comforter
  • laundry hamper
  • hangers

also consider:

  • bedside lamp
  • large plastic under-bed storage bin for off-season clothes
  • over the door full-length mirror
  • closet shoe organizer
  • a fan

Cleaning and laundry

  • detergent and fabric softener
  • stain spray
  • Clorox wipes
  • glass cleaner
  • papertowels
  • toilet bowl cleaner and toilet brush
  • Swiffer or broom and dustpan
  • vacuum cleaner

also consider:

  • duster
  • sponges
  • drying rack
  • iron and ironing board
  • mini-sewing kit

Bathroom

  • towels
  • bath mat
  • shower curtain
  • trash can
  • your toiletries
  • hair styling tools
  • toilet paper
  • handsoap
  • first aid kit (or at least aspirin and bandaids)
  • shower caddy

Kitchen

  • plates, bowls, mugs and glasses
  • silverware
  • pans and pots (or at least one of each)
  • spatula
  • knives
  • can opener
  • bottle opener / corkscrew
  • colander (for draining pasta or mac&cheese noodles)
  • dish towels
  • dish soap
  • trash can and trash bags

  • coffee maker
    toaster
    microwave
    blender
    dish drying rack
    oven mitt
    plastic wrap
    plastic containers or Ziploc storage bags

basic pantry items

  • bread
  • cereal
  • coffee and/or tea
  • mac & cheese
  • peanut butter and jelly
  • Ramen or canned soup
  • sugar, salt and pepper

also consider:
stocking the fridge with milk, oj, butter, eggs, and ketchup
stocking the freezer with some frozen pizzas and burritos

Desk supplies

  • laptop
  • headphones
  • stapler and staples
  • paper clips
  • stamps
  • pens and highlighters
  • post-it notes
  • power strip
  • printer, ink and paper

Furniture

  • bed
  • dresser
  • couch and/or chairs
  • kitchen table and chairs

  • music system
